Impact of smartphone use on sleep

How do our smartphones affect the way we sleep? At this Science Café Wageningen, Dr. Inês Machado (Erasmus MC) will share insights into our biological clock and the health risks of circadian disruption through smartphone use, while Dr. Maartje van Stralen (VU Amsterdam) will discuss how screen use and other daily routines shape our sleep health. Join us for an evening of science and conversation about how modern life interacts with our most fundamental rhythm.

Dr. Inês P. Machado is an Assistant Professor at Erasmus MC (Erasmus University Rotterdam) within the Molecular Genetics division. Her research focuses on the circadian clock  and health risks associated with circadian disturbance. She is associated with the Bioclock consortium, in which researchers and societal partners from across the Netherlands have joined forces to restore and preserve the health of the biological clock.

Dr. Maartje van Stralen is Associate Professor of Health Sciences at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, specialized in sleep health and mental well-being in youth. She is an expert in the systematic development of interventions. Central to her work is a systems approach, which acknowledges the complexity of sleep health by considering interacting factors such as screen use and performance pressure. With great pleasure and dedication, she works to connect practice, policy, and science to better understand and transform the system to promote healthy sleep.
